Types of Membership
There are six kinds of memberships in the Society of Toxicology; Full, Associate, Postdoctoral, Student, Honorary, Retired, and Emeritus. Be advised that Associate Membership is not a pre-requisite to apply for Full Membership. The benefits and criteria of each category are as follows:
Full Member Benefits:
- Recognition among your peers
- SOT Publications including Annual Meeting information and the SOT newsletter, Communiqué
- SOT official journal, Toxicological Sciences, electronic access and discounted subscription to the print version
- Right to sponsor non-member colleague abstracts at the Annual Meeting
- Voting privileges to help shape the future and direction of the Society
- Officer eligibility to assume leadership positions that help forward the mission and objectives of the Society
- Unrestricted eligibility to participate on SOT’s appointed committees that foster the development of the strategic initiatives of the Society
- Right to chair sessions at the Annual Meeting
- Eligibility for many of SOT’s distinguished awards
- Eligibility to hold a leadership position as a Regional Chapter officer
- Registration fees reduced for the SOT Annual Meeting
- Career Resource and Development Job Bank services at no cost
- Access to member-restricted information on SOT’s Web site
Full Member Criteria:
Based on peer-reviewed publications—
Relevant toxicology experience:
- 3 years post-Doctoral or
- 6 years post-Master's or
- 8 years post-Bachelor of Science
Sponsorship by two Full Members of the Society of Toxicology. Members of SOT Council and Membership Committee are not excluded from sponsoring potential members.
Minimum of two peer-reviewed toxicology publications not resulting from doctoral research.
Based on documented professional experience—
Relevant toxicology experience:
- 5 years postdoctoral or
- 8 years post-Master’s or
- 10 years post-Bachelor of Science
Sponsorship by three Full Members of the Society of Toxicology. Members of SOT Council and Membership Committee are not excluded from sponsoring potential members.
Associate Member Benefits:

- Career Resource and Development Job Bank services at no cost
- Access to member-restricted information on the SOT’s Web site
Associate Member Criteria:
- Demonstrated professional scientific activities in toxicology
- Evidence of continuing professional involvement
- Sponsorship by two Full Members of the Society of Toxicology. Members of SOT Council and Membership Committee are not excluded from sponsoring potential members
Postdoctoral Member Benefits:
- Distinction among your peers
- SOT Publications including Annual Meeting information and SOT newsletter, Communiqué
- SOT official journal, Toxicological Sciences, discounted electronic access and subscription to print version
- Inclusion in the Postdoctoral Assembly and eligibility to serve as a representative for a Regional Chapter, Specialty Section, Special Interest Group, SOT Committee
- Right to submit an unsponsored abstract for the Annual Meeting
- Registration fee reduced for the Annual Meeting
- Career Resource and Development Job Bank services at no cost
- Membership in one Specialty Section and one Special Interest Group at no cost
- Access to member-restricted information on SOT’s Web site
Postdoctoral Member Criteria:
- Postdoctoral researchers holding a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M.) with an interest in toxicology and under the direction of a research mentor shall be eligible for Postdoctoral membership, subject to conditions set forth in the By-Laws. This category of membership may be maintained for up to six calendar years
- Certification by major advisor or director of graduate studies of postdoctoral status. Members of SOT Council and Membership Committee are not excluded from providing letters for their students
Graduate Student Member Benefits:
- Distinction among your peers
- SOT Publications including Annual Meeting information and SOT newsletter, Communiqué
- SOT official journal, Toxicological Sciences, discounted electronic access and subscription to the print version
- Eligibility for travel awards and fellowships
- Eligibility to participate in the Graduate Student Leadership Committee and serve as a representative for a Regional Chapter, Specialty Section, Special Interest Group, SOT Committee
- Right to submit an unsponsored abstract for the Annual Meeting
- Registration fees reduced for the Annual Meeting
- Career Resource and Development Job Bank services at no cost
- Membership in one Specialty Section and one Special Interest Group at no cost
- Access to member-restricted information on SOT’s Web site
Graduate Student Member Criteria:
- Must be enrolled in a graduate degree program
- Certification by major advisor or director of graduate studies applicant's status. Members of SOT Council and Membership Committee are not excluded from providing letters for their students
Honorary Member Benefits:
- Recognition by the world’s premier toxicology society
- Privileges of SOT membership, except for voting rights
- Membership provided on a complimentary basis
Honorary Member Criteria:
- Career achievements in toxicology
- Determined by SOT Council
Retired Member Benefits:
- Connection continued to community of toxicologists
- Membership retained, except for electronic Toxicological Sciences subscription
- SOT official journal, Toxicological Sciences, electronic access and discounted subscription to the print version
- Registration fees reduced for Annual Meeting
Retired Member Criteria:
- Full or Associate Members in good standing who earn less than 50% of their total income from toxicology-related work
- Submit a letter to SOT Council stating that he/she earns less than 50% of their total income from toxicology-related work in order to be eligible for retired status
Emeritus Member Benefits:
- Connection continued to community of toxicologists
- Membership retained
- SOT official journal, Toxicological Sciences, electronic access and discounted subscription to the print version
- Registration fees reduced for Annual Meeting
Emeritus Member Criteria:
- A Full or Associate member of the Society who has maintained membership continuously for 40 years will become an Emeritus member unless he or she declines
- Emeritus members shall retain their privileges of membership, will not pay dues, and will receive the journal electronically

Use the On-Line Membership Application Process.
A full description of the process and requirements for membership can be found on the Society Web site under the Membership Information section. The on-line process takes an applicant about 15 minutes to complete.
