Initial Organization of the Ohio Valley Chapter of the Society of Toxicology
In 1982 at the joint meeting of SOT and ASPET held in Louisville, Kentucky, Dr. Robert A. D’Amato, Manager of Worldwide Product Safety at the Procter and Gamble Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, suggested that a regional chapter of SOT be organized that would include Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. West Virginia was added to the Chapter later.
On May 11, 1983, Drs. D’Amato and William J. Waddell, Chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Louisville, attended the SOT Council meeting in Chicago to seek approval and begin planning of the OVSOT. An organizational meeting was held in July 15-16, 1983 in Cincinnati at the Drawbridge Inn. Dr. James E. Gibson, Regional Chapter Liaison for SOT, Vice President of CIIT, and President of the North Carolina Regional Chapter of SOT was invited and spoke at the meeting on the merits of having regional chapters. Dr. D’Amato had made sure that all potentially interested individuals had received invitations and indicated that he would seek financial support from Procter and Gamble to get it started. The format of a spring meeting each year in Cincinnati with fall meetings that would rotate among Louisville, Indianapolis, Lexington, Columbus and perhaps other cities was established at that time. Also the custom of a reception the night before the meeting was suggested by Dr. D’Amato to facilitate toxicologists in the region getting to know each other. Poster sessions have always been a part of each of the meetings, including the first fall meeting in 1983. No registration fee was charged for several years; either the host or Procter & Gamble subsidized all the expenses of the reception and meeting; membership in OVSOT was $5.00.
Throughout all the years, Dr. D’Amato insisted on keeping a low profile in OVSOT; he declined to accept an office other than membership on Council, but he was the driving force behind the formation and continued success of the Chapter. In the early years he provided further support from Procter and Gamble by coordinating visits by their consultants with the dates of the meetings so that these outside scientists could present keynote talks at the OVSOT meetings without any expense to the Chapter. The Spring meeting in 1991of the Chapter was dedicated to Dr. D’Amato in recognition of his efforts and encouragement following Dr. D’Amato’s untimely death earlier that year.
The Chapter also would not have succeeded without the splendid and continued assistance of Mark Lafranconi at Procter and Gamble; for many years he served in various capacities in the OVSOT, both officially and behind the scene. This service was recognized belatedly by an award to Mark at the 2000 annual meeting in Cincinnati.
The OVSOT chapter of SOT was officially organized and recognized by SOT in 1983; it was among four new regional chapters that year to join the six existing chapters to make a total of ten. The OVSOT met the SOT requirement of a minimum of 25 members within the first year.
The activities of the Chapter are detailed below by year. If you have any additions, corrections, comments, or pictures to add, please send them to: Bill Waddell, Phone: 502-228-4220; FAX: 502-228-6779; Email: bwaddell@louisville.edu; 14300 Rose Wycombe Lane, Prospect, KY 40059.
