The IVAM Specialty Section was pleased to recognize the achievements of our student award winners at the 2011 National Meeting in Washington D.C. Four awards were given this year, 1st and 2nd place post-doctoral awards and 1st and 2nd place student awards. Each award winner received an award letter and a monetary award at the luncheon. Congratulations to all.
1st Place Student: Andrea DeSantis—“Nitrogen mustard-induced corneal injury is ameliorated by ADAM17/TACE inhibitors.” ($400 award)
2nd Place Student: Michael Borland—“Stable over-expression of PPARβ/δ and PPARγ to examine receptor signaling in human HaCaT keratinocytes.” ($200 award)
1st Place Post Doc: Dongeun (Dan) Huh—“A human breathing lung-on-a-chip for drug screening and nanotoxicology applications.” ($400 award)
2nd Place Post Doc: Anna Grosberg—“Novel in vitro approach for assessing cardiac contractile liabilities using micropatterned muscular thin films.” ($200 award)
We are also proud to announce Anna Grosberg as the winner of the MB Student Research Award. The award was presented by George DeGeorge Ph.D., Director and Chief Scientific Officer at MB Research Labs.
The In Vitro and Alternative Methods Specialty Section sponsors student awards for posters on subjects related to in vitro toxicology.
Every year the IVAM recognizes outstanding student scientists for their work in the In Vitro Toxicology. The interests of this specialty section include studies of basic mechanisms of cell injury and cell death for target organ systems and the development of in vitro test systems for predictive toxicology and risk assessments. Validation of in vitro test systems and acceptance of these approaches for regulatory processes are also major goals. In addition, another IVAM goal is to encourage the use of sound science-based in vitro toxicology test systems as rapid, cost-effective alternatives to animal testing.
| Award Title | In Vitro and Alternative Methods SS Student Award |
| Award Description | Scientific merit of submitted abstract. Submitted abstract must be accompanied by letter of support from advisor. Winner Receives: Awards of up to $500 for either graduate students or postdoctoral fellows are available. Winner Receives: An award of $500. Open to Postdoctoral Fellows. This award is meant to focus on the practical aspects of in vitro or alternative methods, in contrast to basic research or mechanism-based research. A panel of judges composed of MB Research staff and an IVAM executive council member will judge the submitted abstracts. Only abstracts submitted for the Annual Society of Toxicology meeting will be considered for this award. Applicants must be present at the IVAM meeting (at SOT 2012) to win.
