The Mechanisms Section sponsors a Graduate
Student Award program for student members of the section, with awards made annually at the SOT Annual Meeting. The
awards include a Merck Postdoctoral Travel Award and the Carl C. Smith Graduate Student Award. For more information also visit the SOT

Mechanisms SS Carl C. Smith Graduate Student Award |
| Award Description
|
1. An abstract must be submitted for the 2012 SOT Annual Meeting with the graduate student as the presenting author.
2. A copy of the abstract and a statement that it is to be considered for this award must be sent as an electronic file attachment (Word or pdf) to Brian Cummings, and must be sent no later than October 10, 2011.
3. Two letters recommending the graduate student and the research project must be sent for each abstract. One of the recommendations must be from the Department or Section Head. The letter must verify that the work reported in the abstract was done while the student was enrolled in the graduate program and that this is the only specialty section to which this abstract is being submitted for an award. The letter must also specially cite the role and contribution of the student in the completion of the work, especially when there are multiple authors. Letters should be sent electronically to Brian Cummings by the individuals making the recommendations.
4. Up to three (3) candidates may be nominated by a department or program. The department or program must decide which graduate students best represent them.
5. The graduate student may be sponsored for this award by any person who is a member (active or pending) of the Mechanisms Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology. Member sponsorship from the Mechanisms Specialty Section should be noted in one of the letters of recommendation.

Mechanisms SS Postdoctoral Student Travel Award |
| Award Description

The Mechanisms Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology is pleased to announce a competitive travel award to support the travel of two postdoctoral fellows (up to $500 each) to attend the 51st Annual Meeting of the Society of Toxicology.
For consideration as a candidate for an award:
1) An abstract must have been submitted to the 2012 SOT Annual Meeting with the postdoctoral fellow as the presenting author. A copy of the abstract and a statement that it is to be considered for this award must be sent electronically as a file attachment (WORD or PDF) to Vasilis Vasiliou no later than October 10, 2011.
2) Two letters recommending the postdoctoral fellow and the research project must accompany the abstract. One letter must be from the postdoctoral fellow’s mentor and must specifically state the role and contribution of the fellow in the completion of the work, especially when there are multiple authors.
3)The postdoctoral fellow may be sponsored for this award by any person who is a member (active or pending) of the Mechanisms Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology. Member sponsorship from the Mechanisms Specialty Section should be noted in one of the letters of recommendation.
Selection of the awardees will be based on the strength of the mechanistic focus of their research and letters of recommendations. Any questions concerning this award should be directed to Vasilis Vasiliou. |

Mechanisms SS Robert J. Rubin Student Travel Award |
| Award Description
|
The Mechanisms and Risk Assessment Specialty Sections Robert J. Rubin Student Travel Award provides travel awards to one or more graduate students to participate in the Annual Meeting of the SOT. Recipients of the Rubin Award will be selected by a Committee jointly appointed by the leadership of the Mechanisms Specialty Section and the Risk Assessment Specialty Section. The Award Recipient(s) will be selected based on the scientific quality of the abstract of a presentation that applies mechanistic toxicology to risk assessment and that has been accepted for presentation at an Annual Meeting of the Society of Toxicology. The abstract and presentation should be based on the student's research. Applications for the Award will be accepted for presentations to be given up to one year after the Award Recipient receives their doctoral degree.

Mechanisms SS Renal Toxicology Award |

Eligibility for Renal Toxicology award:
- Predoctoral Graduate Student
- Postdoctoral Scientist
- Member of SOT
Submission mechanisms and judging criteria:
- Submission of abstract for SOT Annual Meeting
- Additional—300 word summary that includes purpose of studies or hypothesis being tested, scientific approach (very briefly described), results and significance
- Focus of the award is on kidneys: examples including but not limited to mechanistic or molecular renal toxicology, drug discovery for renal diseases, studies validating urinary biomarkers, measurement of elimination rats of toxicants. Part of the submission essay should describe how the applicant focuses on the renal toxicology aspects.
- Additional letter of support from mentor/advisor describing how project fits into scope of laboratory
- Abstract, essay and supporting letter to be sent to Terry Kavanagh by December 15, 2011

Mechanisms SS Gabriel L. Plaa Education Award |
| Award Description
|
Dr. Gabriel L. Plaa (1930–2009) made outstanding contributions to applying mechanistic toxicology to the area of chemical-induced liver injury during his career. He held the office of Society of Toxicology (SOT) President from 1983–1984 and received numerous awards from the SOT. Just as importantly, Dr. Plaa played a significant role in the education of graduate and post-graduate students in toxicology. His influence was truly extraordinary, and many of his former students also had leadership roles in, and received awards from, the SOT.
The Mechanisms Specialty Section is pleased to offer the Gabriel L. Plaa Education Award to postdoctoral trainees. The requirements for the award are:
1. The applicant must be a postdoctoral trainee and a member of the SOT or have applied for membership with a pending outcome. The applicant does not have to be a member of the Mechanisms Specialty Section.
2. The applicant must be the presenting author on an abstract submitted to the SOT Annual Meeting for the year in which application for the award is made.
3. The applicant should be willing to arrive at the meeting by noon on Sunday for an interview with the selection committee.
4. Applicants must be sponsored for this award by any person who is a member of the Mechanisms Specialty Section of the SOT. Member sponsorship from the Mechanisms Specialty Section should be noted in one of the letters of recommendation.
The following materials should be submitted to Jose Manautou, Past President of the Mechanisms Specialty Section:
1. A cover letter (2 pages maximum) that includes a statement of the applicant’s research interests and how his/her current research advances the field of mechanistic toxicology
2. A copy of the abstract
3. A current Curriculum Vitae
4. Two letters of recommendation: One letter must be from the postdoctoral advisor and must verify that the work reported in the abstract was performed during postdoctoral training.
Recipients will be announced at the Mechanisms Specialty Section business meeting at the SOT Annual Meeting and will receive a plaque and cash award. This award is made possible by the Gabriel L. Plaa Education Award Fund of the SOT Endowment. |
