The Society of Toxicology is a professional and scholarly organization
of scientists from academic institutions, government, and industry representing
the great variety of scientists who practice toxicology in the U.S. and
abroad. The Society promotes the acquisition and utilization of knowledge
in toxicology, aids in the protection of public health, and facilitates
disciplines. The Society has a strong commitment to education in toxicology
and to the recruitment of students and new members into the profession.
What is Toxicology?
Toxicology is the study of the adverse effects of chemical, physical
or biological agents on living organisms and the ecosystem, including
the prevention and amelioration of such adverse effects.
The Society of Toxicology was founded in 1961 as a not-for-profit scientific
society. The historical accounting of the Society, Society
of Toxicology 1961–1997, is now available on-line.
The Historical account from 1961-1986 was compiled by the past SOT Historian,
Dr. Harry W. Hayes and available both in print and on-line. Dr. Robert
Scala, the past SOT Historian, has compiled the historical content from
1986 to 1997, which is available on-line. The history from 1998 to the present will be added to the site as it becomes available.
The Society is governed by an 11-person elected Council and managed
by an administrative office in the Washington, DC area. The Society's
activities
are highly diverse and assisted by the efforts of nearly 25 Elected
and Appointed Committees.
The Society has established 21 Specialty
Sections that may propose sessions for the
Annual Meeting, exchange information through its newsletter, Communiqué, present Awards, and participate in other scientific
activities.
The Society of Toxicology has 18 Regional
Chapters that sponsor regular local meetings throughout the
year. The purpose of the Regional Chapters is to foster scientific
exchange at a local level.
To increase the diversity and inclusiveness, the Society of Toxicology
promotes and facilitates the formation of subgroups of members
with a common ethnicity, country of origin and gender. Thus far,
five Special
Interest Groups have been established to develop,
propose, and conduct programs and educational activities focused
on career development opportunities for toxicologists and recognition
of the accomplishments of toxicologists within each group.
Toxicology

Society of Toxicology is dedicated to developing knowledge for the
improvement of the health and safety of living beings and the protection
of their environment. In attaining the objective, each Member must
maintain high ethical standards, and, to this purpose, this Code
of Ethics requires a personal commitment.
