2012
The Africa Education Initiative (NEF)
The Africa Education Initiative (NEF), a US based Foundation, in collaboration with National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), Vom, Nigeria is providing three-month internship opportunities in drug development. Internship opportunities will expose and prepare students for the industry while enhancing their technical and research abilities. Interns will have the opportunity to conduct research in areas compatible with the interests of the NVRI and collaborate and network with leading scientists and engineers at NVRI research laboratories. Students from institutions of higher learning in Africa in Toxicology, Veterinary Medicine, Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Pharmacy, Medicine, and related areas are eligible. A stipend, housing, and travel allowance are provided. The application deadline is March 9, 2012.
Covance
Covance is a drug development services company. Covance’s internship program gives students the opportunity to learn in a challenging and supportive work environment. Internships are focused on providing real industry work experience, developing strong presentation skills and participating in volunteer projects or activities. Opportunities are available in a number of specialties including toxicology, nutritional chemistry and food safety, and biomarkers. Internships are available nationwide.
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)
The Summer Talent Identification Program (STIP) is designed to recruit and hire top quality interns to feed the talent pipeline for GSK. These opportunities are available at sites in the Raleigh, North Carolina and the Greater Philadelphia, Pennsylvania areas. Recruitment begins in January for the summer program. Positions will be posted online an ongoing basis in January and February. The program runs 10–12 weeks from May through August.
Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences
The Hamner’s summer internship program was introduced in 1989 to encourage promising college students to consider careers in the sciences. Under the guidance of scientific staff, interns are exposed to various facets of on-going research projects at The Hamner, including literature review, conduct of experiments, data analysis, and interpretation of results. Many of the past summer interns have gone on to earn graduate degrees in toxicology and related fields. The application deadline is March 1, 2012.
International Life Sciences Institute
The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) is inviting applicationsfrom graduate students for the Food and Chemical Safety Summer Fellowship Program. The fellow will be assigned a project that is agreed upon between the fellow and the Food and Chemical Safety Committee.
The four areas of interest are:
- Evaluation of the human health implication of AGEs and ALEs
- Natural Colors
- Furan: Estimate the risk from different points of view of heat formed compounds with an emphasis on furan formation during the heat processing of foods
- Tox21
The fellow will be provided with a stipend intended to cover expenses including transportation to/from Washington DC and housing. Deadline for application submission is Wednesday, April 4, 2012. The selection of the candidate will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and the appropriate fit with the candidate’s desired project choice.
Louisiana State University—Health Sciences Center
The Summer Undergraduate Pharmacology Research Program (SUPER) at the Health Sciences Center, Louisiana State University, Shreveport is a ten-week program for undergraduate students who are interested in the field of pharmacology. Students participate in laboratory research experiments and attend weekly lectures on topics that will help prepare them for success in research-intensive doctoral programs. The deadline for application is Monday, March 5, 2012. Applicants must have completed two years of undergraduate education and prior research experience is preferred but not required.
Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute
Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute supports a number of educational research programs for students at the pre-college, undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels. Educational programs provide research opportunities at the Institute within various divisions, including Toxicology, Pathophysiology, Immunology, Infectious Diseases, Microbiology, Virology, Cardiopulmonary Physiology, Radiation, Employee Health and Safety, and many other disciplines. Positions and availability vary each year. If interested, please submit a resume to be evaluated.
Michigan State University
Faculty of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology welcome inquiries from students who wish to spend the summer in a laboratory on MSU’s East Lansing campus doing research. There is no formal application process. Interested students should browse the faculty pages on the MSU website and identify those with whom they would like to work, and whose research programs encompass the student’s own interests. First contact should be via email, accompanied by a brief letter of intent, including their reasons for applying to that particular faculty member, and a resume.
- Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunities
Monsanto
Monsanto addresses to timeless agricultural problems, incorporating cutting-edge technology to give farmers around the world the ability to grow more crops with fewer resources. Monsanto offers both summer internships as well as semester-long co-ops. Internships take place over 10–12 weeks, and provide the intern with a continuous learning experience. Training, networking opportunities, and professional guidance are also available during the internship. Both opportunities are full-time and paid, and the majority of new graduate hires at Monsanto are participants in these programs.
Novartis
Novartis is a global pharmaceutical corporation providing the scientific intern program at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). Interns aid in the search for new disease therapies. Our program is designed to introduce talented students to drug discovery and to train them in experimental work in this area. Applications for internships in Emeryville, California are due March 31, 2012. Applications for the Cambridge, Massachusetts and East Hanover, New Jersey locations were due on January 31, 2012, but some opportunities may become available at those locations into March so late applications may be considered.
Pfizer Global Research and Development
Pfizer, a global pharmaceutical corporation, provides short-term student work to support Pfizer’s business needs during the summer months through the Summer Student Worker Program (SWP). The program seeks to augment staff to accomplish departmental goals while offering practical and valuable business experience to the student participant. Students can apply for a variety of fields including: animal research support; clinical research; medical affairs; and veterinary pathology. Applicants must have completed at least two years of undergraduate education, and be enrolled for the Fall 2012 semester. The application deadline for the program is Saturday, March 31, 2012. Relocation and housing costs will not be provided.
Rutgers University
The Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy of Rutgers University hosts the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program for highly motivated undergraduates interested in a career as a researcher in the pharmaceutical and environmental sciences. Students conduct full-time research in areas related to Pharmacology and Toxicology, Environmental Health Sciences, Pharmaceutics, Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical Biology, and Clinical Pharmacy Research; previous research experience is not required. Students should be sophomores, juniors, or seniors at the time of application. This program is funded by NIH ES020721.
University of Kansas
The faculty of the Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutics at the University of Kansas Medical Center provides basic research internships for the summer of 2012 (June 4–August 10). Undergraduate students (international students with a valid visa also qualify) accepted into the program will perform basic research in Pharmacology or Toxicology in the Department or in the affiliated Centers for Cancer, Environmental and Occupational Health, and the Smith Mental Retardation and Human Development, while studying interactions between biological systems and chemical agents. Each student will work in the laboratory of an individual member of the faculty. The program also includes weekly discussion sessions with faculty members and current Pharmacology or Toxicology graduate students on selected topics in Pharmacology and Toxicology. The application deadline is Thursday, March 15, 2012. Interns will receive a $3000 stipend, but no housing will be provided. This summer undergraduate fellowship program is supported in part by an award from the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.
The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center
The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center is a medical research center. The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) Summer Undergraduate Research program aims to provide an interactive and fulfilling experience in cancer research to talented undergraduate students by creating situations for them to interact with CPRIT scholars and Translational Research in Multi-Disciplinary Program (TRIUMPH) Postdoctoral fellows. The application deadline for all materials is Friday, February 10, 2012. A stipend of $5000 will be provided.
University of Washington
The University of Washington Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences provides the Environmental Health Research Experience Program (EH REP), a nine week, paid summer experience for talented undergraduates who express strong interest in environmental health science research. Accepted students will be paired with a faculty mentor. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, February 15, 2012. Students from populations traditionally underrepresented in the sciences are encouraged to apply. This program is funded by a grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).
University of Wisconsin-Madison
The University of Wisconsin-Madison Molecular and Environmental Toxicology Center offers the Summer Research Opportunities program. This program is designed to provide traditionally underrepresented minority undergraduate students with a hands-on research experience in molecular and environmental toxicology. Students will be mentored in cell biology, genetics, developmental biology, immunotoxicology, environmental toxicant remediation, or other projects. The program will cover most travel and housing expenses, and provides a $5000 stipend for the summer. The application deadline is Wednesday, February 15, 2012. Although all undergraduates are eligible, sophomores and juniors are preferred.
