Caltech’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships program introduces students to research under the guidance of seasoned research mentors at Caltech and JPL. Students experience the process of research as a creative intellectual activity.

Committee on Institutional Cooperation

This program exposes talented undergraduates to professional and educational opportunities in the academy. The goal of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented students who pursue academic careers by enhancing their preparation for graduate study through intensive research experiences with faculty mentors. This program is a consortium of the Big Ten Universities and the University of Chicago.

Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL)

Alabama’s Dauphin Island Sea Lab will offer seven undergraduate fellowships in marine science funded by the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, and the DISL. This program is for undergraduate students interested in pursuing careers or graduate studies in Marine Sciences. Students selected for the program will participate in an intensive 12-week research experience in which they will work within a faculty research group and develop and complete their own independent research project.

HHMI Janelia Undergraduate Scholars

Open to any undergraduate, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Janelia Undergraduate Scholars program provides a 10 week summer research experience as an intern in the lab of a mentor at Janelia Farm in Northern Virginia. The program deadline is in January.

National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE)

NCSE’s Campus to Careers (C2C) Program is dedicated to fostering and guiding environmentally motivated students in their transition to professional careers and beyond into leadership roles in the government, non-profit and private sectors. C2C provides meaningful, paid internships, fellowships, and other short-term positions to expose college students and recent graduates to real world experience as well as mentoring and career networking opportunities in the environment and energy fields.

Saturday Academy at OSU is a great opportunity for girls to get involved in science, engineering and math activities. The AWSEM club has two separate groups; one for middle school girls and one for high school girls.

Renewable Natural Resources Foundation (RNRF)

The Renewable Natural Resources Foundation has members including scientific and educational organizations that advance science and public education in renewable natural resources, including the application of scientific knowledge to the management of renewable natural resources.

University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)

The Amgen Scholars Program is a national summer program for students committed to pursuing a Ph.D. in science or engineering. UCLA will host 12 students from UCLA and 1students from other institutions in 2011. Minimum GPA: 3.2. Students interested summer research in any area of biomedical science, chemistry, bioengineering, or chemical engineering are encouraged to apply. The 10 week summer program includes $350 stipend, room, and board. The 6-week BISEP summer program prepares students for upper division science coursework and undergraduate research. The program consists of a Biotechnology Laboratory, Advanced Writing Seminars, Journal Clubs, Laboratory Rotations Seminand Workshops. Applicants should have completed their freshman year in a life science, chemistry or biochemistry major. Stipend is $300 per week and approximately 24 students are selected. University of Maryland Sea Grant Program

The Maryland Sea Grant Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program will offer thirteen students the opportunity to conduct marine research on the Chesapeake Bay. The program is especially designed for students majoring in such fields as biology, chemistry, ecology, physics, engineering, mathematics and marine and environmental science.

University of Michigan Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA), Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL), and the Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystems Research (CILER), administered by the University of Michigan, provide information on fellowships and summer research opportunities.

University of Montana

The Center for Environmental Health Sciences (CEHS) at The University of Montana sponsors a summer educational research experience for outstanding college undergraduates. The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) is part of a national program to attract and train undergraduates to research careers in the environmental health sciences. The Center’s SURP ten-week summer program presents extraordinary opportunities to learn from experts about the philosophy and practice of conducting current biomedical research. In addition, SURP students receive a $4,000 stipend and gain extensive hands-on research experience working in the Center’s state-of-the-art laboratories.

University of South Alabama

The University of South Alabama offers an interdisciplinary undergraduate research program sponsored by the National Science Foundation to work for 10 weeks over the summer semester in the area of “Structure and Function of Proteins.” Students accepted to the program must have a strong interest in basic research, and are expected to work full time in their projects under the direction of faculty advisors
