Seattle, Washington
A symposium by and for high school students
in Washington State
Sponsored by the Society of Toxicology
About the TEAMS project
Imagine students presenting their work to scientists from around the country using the
Washington State K20 videoconferencing system…
Imagine students having a toxicologist available as a resource while they research and develop
their projects…
Imagine students discovering and sharing the scientific facts that underlie sunscreen
recommendations, why carbon monoxide monitors are a good idea, how and why recommendations for consumption of
seafood containing mercury are developed, burn bans, water quality requirements…
Imagine students seeing firsthand how science can intersect with ethics, public policy, sociology,
history and geography in a single issue…
As a part of its annual meeting in Seattle next March, the Society of Toxicology is sponsoring TEAMS, a symposium by and for high school students to promote understanding of how toxicology impacts our lives every day. Toxicology is the study of the negative effects of chemicals on living systems. Work in toxicology has an impact on many aspects of our lives. The symposium will be held as a videoconference connecting students around the state with each other and with toxicologists and educators at the Convention Center in Seattle.
There is no cost to students or schools to participate.
Student groups will prepare projects and present their findings to their peers and to a panel of experts in the field of toxicology and environmental health, taking advantage of Washington’s K20 video network. Students will have the opportunity to work with professional toxicologists as mentors and advisors in developing their projects during the months of January and February. The goal of the TEAMS Project is for small groups of students to develop a 10 minute presentation to educate other students about a health or environmental issue of importance to them or to their community and understand the role that toxicology plays in identifying, characterizing and solving such issues. In March, twelve groups of students will present their projects to one another and to a panel of scientific experts via a live videoconference link during the SOT Annual Meeting. Student groups not making a live presentation will have the opportunity to submit a video, PowerPoint or podcast version of their project for a virtual poster session at SOT. A panel of experts will provide comments/feedback to each student group presenting in the virtual poster session.
