Special Events at the SOT 2012 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California
February 2, 2012

Dear SOT Member,

If you're planning on attending the SOT 2012 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California we want to make you aware of two special events taking place at the meeting. Please see the information on the events below.

Tox ShowDown

Inspired by the North American Congress of Clinical Toxicology’s annual Toxicology Quiz Bowl and St. John’s University’s annual Tox Throwdown, SOT will be holding its own version, Tox ShowDown, at the SOT 51st Annual Meeting, Tuesday, March 13, at 7:30 pm (Marriott Marquis Hotel, a few steps away from the Moscone Convention Center). The planners of this exciting Annual Meeting event are seeking prospective contestants for the three teams.

It will be a lively test of contestants’ knowledge of toxicological fact and fancy for a program of education and entertainment!

Questions will be related not only to toxicology’s scientific context, but also to its cultural and societal impact, and its mystery and myth. Consider questions such as:

  • Who is the current Vice President of SOT?
  • Nanoparticles of what element have been extensively studied in fish with no real consensus yet on the degree of harm they may cause?
  • What is the name of the play from which this verse is taken-“Round about the caldron go;/In the poison’d entrails throw?”
  • What substance is the single major cause of skin cancer, resulting in some half a million new cases per year in the United States?

If you are interested in joining one of three teams (of four contestants each) and are knowledgeable, curious adventurous, foolhardy, or just in it for laughs (all acceptable prerequisites), please reply via email by February 15, 2012.

Please reply with the following information:

Your name, professional affiliation (including city, state, and country), SOT Specialty Section(s) and/or how many years you have been an SOT member, and why you want to participate.

Host Mentors for the 2012 SOT Undergraduate Education Program
December 7, 2011

Dear SOT Member,

The Committee for Diversity Initiatives (CDI) invites you to serve as a Host Mentor for the Undergraduate Education Program March 10–12, 2012, in San Francisco, California. This program is an important and long-standing SOT initiative designed to encourage students to pursue graduate studies in toxicology. About 40 undergraduate students have been selected to attend, some from groups that are underrepresented in the sciences and others from institutions that receive low levels of federal science funding.

Host mentors are critical to the program. Program participants are organized into mentoring groups, as a mentor relationship is cited as a key factor for students who progress to graduate school. As a Host Mentor, we anticipate that you will draw upon your own experiences to add a personal touch to the information presented within the program. This is a rewarding opportunity to provide eager undergraduate students with your unique perspective on toxicology graduate studies and careers.

The Host Mentors arrive Saturday, March 10, 2012, and meet their groups during the evening reception. We encourage you to participate in as many of the activities as possible through midday Monday, March 12. Each group includes one or more toxicologist Host Mentors, two Peer Mentors (graduate student and postdoctoral scholars), an advisor from an undergraduate institution, and four or five students. During the two-day program, beginning 4:30 pm Saturday, through 1:00 pm Monday, the groups will investigate the field of toxicology, interact with poster presenters, learn about the toxicology discipline as a career, and explore options for graduate school. Host Mentors and Peer Mentors put the students at ease, discuss what a career as a scientist is like, answer questions, help students find the rooms for their sessions, review posters, and visit the exhibit hall and scientific sessions together.

To volunteer as a Host Mentor, please contact me at the link below. We look forward to your volunteering and participating in the 2012 Undergraduate Education Program to make it a grand success.

SOT—US EPA Call for Nominations
December 6, 2011

Dear SOT Member,

The US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) is seeking nominees from the scientific community to be considered for appointment to the US EPA’s Science Advisory Board (SAB) Chemical Assessment Advisory Committee to provide advice through the chartered SAB regarding Toxicological Reviews of environmental chemicals available on US EPA’s Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS).

The chartered Board provides strategic advice to the US EPA Administrator on a variety of US EPA science and research programs and reviews and approves all SAB subcommittee and panel reports. Additional information about the SAB Federal Advisory Committees may be found on the US EPA website.

US EPA’s Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) is a publicly available database which contains hazard and dose-response information on hundreds of chemical substances and their potential health effects. US EPA’s IRIS program develops human health risk assessments (i.e., Toxicological Reviews) used to inform the Agency’s decisions on protecting public health. US EPA is seeking SAB advice on a continuous basis as part of an effort to strengthen and streamline the process for IRIS Toxicological Review development. In response, the SAB is establishing a new subcommittee, the Chemical Assessment Advisory Committee, which will provide advice through the chartered SAB regarding the IRIS program and the development of IRIS Toxicological Reviews.

The SAB Staff Office is seeking nominations of experts to serve on the SAB Chemical Assessment Advisory Committee with knowledge in human health risk assessment and expertise in a range of disciplines including, but not limited to: public health; epidemiology; toxicology; modeling; biostatistics; and risk assessment.

SOT members may nominate one or more qualified individuals for membership on the advisory committee. Self-nominations are also accepted. Nominations must include a current, complete resume or curriculum vitae (CV) for each nominee, including current business address and/or home address, telephone number, and email address if available. SOT members should submit their CVs and any additional information to Martha Lindauer by December 23, 2011. A Subcommittee of SOT Council will review the nominations and will forward those to EPA’s Science Advisory Board (SAB) Chemical Assessment Advisory Committee for further consideration.

Thank you for participating in this important process!

Global Toxicology Scholar Program Deadline November 14
October 13, 2011

Dear SOT Member,

The SOT Education Committee encourages toxicologists to visit campuses to promote careers in toxicology, including institutions outside the United States. The Global Toxicology Scholar Program provides funding up to $1250 for toxicologists to visit institutions in developing nations to interact with undergraduate and graduate students. The SOT Education Committee suggests that the applicant seek matching funding from partners, whether a SOT Special Interest Group, employer, or host institution. A letter from the contact at the institution to be visited is required and letters from sponsoring partner(s) would be included as part of the application. The deadline for the Global Toxicology Scholar Program has been extended to November 14, 2011.

In addition to the Global Toxicology Scholar Program, SOT has two programs to provide up to $500 funding for career visits to undergraduate institutions within the United States. The Toxicology Scholar and Guest Lecturer Programs do not have application deadlines, but funding is limited so apply early and plan now for visits during this academic year. The Education Committee’s Toxicology Scholar Program includes visits to any undergraduate institution. The Committee on Diversity Initiatives sponsors the Guest Lecturer Program to encourage campus presentations at institutions with a high proportion of students from groups that are underrepresented in the sciences.

Tips for planning and organizing a campus visit are found in the Guide to Participating.

SOT Communiqué Readership Survey—Please Respond by October 14
October 5, 2011

Dear SOT Member,

SOT Communiqué Readership Survey—Your Input Is Essential to Guide Our Planning

Just like you, I am a reader of the SOT Communiqué newsletter and turn to it each quarter as a source of vital Society information. I rely on the Communiqué to keep abreast of the many new and ongoing activities within the Society. Since 2010 I have served as the Newsletter Editor and look forward to receiving your responses to the SOT Communiqué Readership Survey on ToXchange that was included in the Summer/Fall 2011 issue. We consider this survey to be of particular importance during this period of Strategic Planning for the Society.

Thus, we are seeking your response to a brief number of questions to determine how best to communicate with you and all the SOT members. What is the best format to communicate to you? How often should we communicate with you? What information is of most importance to you? What areas should be strengthened in the newsletter? We will be reporting the results of the survey in the Winter Issue of the Communiqué and planned next steps.

Thank you in advance for helping us to enhance our communications to you. The Society is committed to providing quality member services and your responses to the survey represent another step in that direction. Please complete the SOT Communiqué Readership Survey on ToXchange at your earliest convenience. The survey will remain open until October 14.

Sincerely,

Peter L. Goering, Ph.D., DABT, ATS
2010–2012 SOT Secretary and Newsletter Editor
