By-Laws Change Is Proposed for Education Committee—Comments Requested

SOT Council is proposing a By-Laws amendment to change the Education Committee from an elected to an appointed committee. As part of Council’s review of the SOT structure relative to current strategic initiatives, we examined the composition of the four elected committees, the Awards, Education, Membership, and Nominating Committees. Three of the committees make decisions for which having membership representation and balance through elected committee members is still important. However, several years ago the determination of fellowship and graduate travel recipients moved from the Education Committee to the Awards Committee. The focus of the Education Committee is on other ways that SOT can advance and promulgate education in toxicology. Council believes that the current activities do not require elected Education Committee members. An appointed committee would provide more flexibility to populate the committee with individuals having specific skills and interests matched to current important strategic education activities. Furthermore, as an appointed committee there would not be the Full Membership requirement, which will allow more diversity on the Education Committee.

With this announcement, a 30-day comment period on this By-Laws change (shown below) has begun, and your insights regarding this transition are welcomed and appreciated. Please send your comments to SOT Headquarters.

Section 6. Education Committee. There shall be an Education Committee consisting of six voting members who hold no other elective office. elected by a plurality vote of ballots cast to serve for three years. Two voting members shall be appointed elected annually for a three-year term by the President. The President shall designate the Chair. The Education Committee shall concern itself with ways in which the Society can advance and promulgate education in toxicology. The Committee shall report its findings and recommendations to Council.
