SOT presented Congressman David Wu (D-OR) with the organization’s first annual Congressional Science Leadership Award on July 9, 2009, during a meeting on Capitol Hill. SOT President Cheryl Lyn Walker presented the award to the Congressman “for his enduring vision and preeminent leadership in fostering the importance of science in the policymaking process.” The Society established the Congressional Leadership Award to draw attention to the role that science plays in the policymaking process. According to Dr. Walker, “Legislators and regulators must be able to rely on the integrity of the science in order to make informed decisions about the issues that impact public health and the environment. The public has to trust the science and the process that guides the legislation and the rulemaking.” Serving his sixth term in office, Congressman Wu is a member of the Science and Technology Committee, which has jurisdiction over research and technology policy, and chairs the Science Subcommittee on Technology and Innovation. Congressman Wu also serves on the House Education and Labor Committee, which has jurisdiction over education policy. The Society’s public announcement of the award noted that Congressman Wu is “one of those lawmakers who understands and appreciates the importance of science. He has consistently based his decision making on sound scientific principles and has pursued legislation designed to protect human health and the environment. Moreover, his legislative efforts demonstrate his dedication to fostering career opportunities in the scientific arena.”
