SOT Endowment Fund Continues to Receive Great Support

Continued Growth:  The SOT Endowment Fund, which was formally initiated in January 2007, continues to grow. During the Society’s 2006–2007 fiscal year that ended June 30, 2007, 120 individuals (or couples) and 1 institution contributed $87,451. For fiscal year 2007–2008, through January 25th, 89 individuals (or couples) and 7 institutions have already contributed $160,000 to the Endowment Fund. The 2007–2008 contributors include many individuals who contributed in 2006–2007 as well as 68 new contributors. The generosity of the 188 individuals (or couples) and 7 institutions has resulted in gifts to the SOT Endowment Fund totaling nearly $250,000.

There is even more good news. The SOT Council in the fall of 2007 approved the use of $250,000 in unrestricted funds as a “50th SOT Anniversary Match,” thus, doubling the impact of the contributions. The initial matching funds have been almost completely used. It is a pleasure to note that acting on the recommendation of the Endowment Fund Board and the Finance Committee, the SOT Council, at its January meeting, approved the use of another $250,000 as a “50th SOT Anniversary Match.” The Matching Funds now in hand, with future gifts equal to the Match, will grow the Endowment Fund assets to over $1 million. Roger O. McClellan, Chair of the SOT Endowment Fund Board, spoke on behalf of the Board. “The Board extends their thanks to all who have already given to the Endowment Fund. We urge all SOT members who have not given to consider one of the individual Funds within the SOT Endowment Fund as a gifting option. Gifts in any amount are most welcome.”

Emil A. Pfitzer Fund:  The SOT Endowment Fund Board and the Drug Discovery Toxicology Specialty Section announced the creation of the “Emil A. Pfitzer Drug Discovery Toxicology Specialty Section Student Award Fund” to memorialize the substantial contributions of the late Dr. Emil A. Pfitzer. Emil Pfitzer had a distinguished career as a toxicologist, including a 22-year career at Hoffmann-LaRoche, where he ultimately served as Vice President of Toxicology and Pathology, and 5 years as President of the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM). He was an active member of the SOT and served as the Society’s 25th President. With generous contributions from Roche, RIFM, the Pfitzer family and friends, along with the “50th SOT Anniversary Match,” the Pfitzer Fund already has assets of over $53,000. Proceeds from the Fund will support Emil A. Pfitzer Student Awards with the recipients selected by the Drug Discovery Toxicology Specialty Section. It is anticipated that the first Pfitzer Student Award(s) will be given at the 2009 SOT Annual Meeting.

You decide on your gifting options: The SOT Endowment Fund now includes 10 Named Funds supporting specific purposes: Carl C. Smith Fund (Mechanisms Specialty Section), Frank C. Lu Fund (Food Safety Specialty Section), Mary Amdur Fund (Inhalation and Respiratory Specialty Section), Perry J. Gehring Fund (Risk Assessment Specialty Section, Biological Modeling Specialty Section, and Under-represented Student Travel), Roger O. McClellan Fund (Comparative and Veterinary Specialty Section and Toxicologic and Exploratory Pathology Specialty Section), Vera W. Hudson and Elizabeth K. Weisburger Fund (Student Scholarships), and Founders Fund. The Molecular Biology Specialty Section and Regulatory and Safety Evaluation Specialty Section also are developing new Funds.

Please give consideration to making a gift to one of the Funds or to the Endowment’s four General Purpose Funds (SOT Priorities, Educational Activities, International Activities, and Student Travel). Your gift will help build the financial future of the SOT. The SOT Endowment Fund can be found on the SOT Web site, including a Donor Contribution Form.
