The SOT Strategic Plan: Defining the Future of SOT

Changes in the field of toxicology have never been greater and the pace of change will only accelerate in the future. The 2008–2011 SOT Strategic Plan details how the Society will work to advance our vision of Creating a Safer and Healthier World by Advancing the Science of Toxicology. While advancement of the vision is being accomplished in significant areas, as a Society we must position ourselves to face the challenge of Increasing the Impact and Future Vitality of Toxicology.

The Strategic Plan presents a roadmap for meeting this challenge by setting priorities that:

  • Increase Scientific Impact
  • Advocate the Value of Toxicology
  • Build for the Future of Toxicology
  • Expand and Deepen Member Engagement
  • Strengthen Organizational Effectiveness

The Strategic Plan details how each of these priorities will be executed through a series of outcome-oriented objectives that will be supported by embracing best practices of professional Society oversight, engaging Society leadership at all levels, and by increasing the involvement of members at all career stages to ensure the future relevance and global impact of toxicology.

Member comments are requested on the SOT Web site. In addition, all members will have an important opportunity to learn more about the plan and to contribute comments during the 2008 Town Hall Meeting, Tuesday, March 18 from 12:00 Noon to 1:20 PM in Seattle. The sole agenda item for this meeting is the Strategic Plan. You can engage in dialogue, raise questions, and offer direct input on the plan and its implementation.

It is also possible for you to give your comments to any member of Council during the Annual Meeting. In addition, several other leadership meetings at the Annual Meeting will feature presentations of the Plan, including the Specialty Section Officers, the Regional Chapter Officers, and the Special Interest Group Officers. All comments and recommendations will be recorded and transcribed, and a record will be placed on the Strategic Plan section of the SOT Web site. The Strategic Plan will remain on the Web site for a 2-week period following the Annual Meeting to allow for a final round of comments and recommendations that may stem from presentations of the Plan at the Annual Meeting.

All those involved in preparing the Strategic Plan want to assure that the future of the Society is consistent with your needs and expectations, and those of our broad-based membership. Please take time to review how the plan envisions the future of your Society, and please contribute your comments.
