  4. Describe grant review at NIH from post-study section to final funding decision
  5. Provide examples of successful strategies
  6. Explain available actions if a grant is not funded

Moderators

Marie Fortin, PhD, PDA Treasurer, Postdoctoral Fellow, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute, Piscataway, NJ

Michele La Merrill, PhD, M.PH., PDA Chair, K99-R00 grantee, Environmental Pediatric Fellow, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY

Panelists

Michael Humble, MS, PhD, Fellowship Program Administrator, NIEHS-DERT, Research Triangle, NC

Patrick Allard, MS, PhD, K99-R00 grantee, Postdoctoral Fellow, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA

José Manautou, PhD, Grant Reviewer, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT

“The Pathway to Independence (PI) Award is designed to facilitate a timely transition from a mentored postdoctoral research position to a stable independent research position with independent NIH or other independent research support at an earlier stage than is currently the norm.” (NIH OER description)

Award of this grant is a chance to fast-forward to a tenure-track position, the dream of many SOT postdoctoral fellows. In addition, this grant is unusual in that US citizenship is not a requirement.

The panelists will provide a breadth of information to the webinar participants who will gain the tools essential to build a solid K99-R00 application. First, Dr. Humble will describe an overview of the application and the evaluation process, the structure of NIEHS along with what to expect after the grant is submitted, timelines, and the meaning of the scores and the odds of being awarded. Then, specific information about the components of a 12-page proposal will be shared, including suggested number of pages or words for each section, the amount of preliminary data to be included and an estimate of the time required to develop a proposal from a specific aims page to the entire submission process. Dr. Allard will provide insight into the process from the perspective of a successful applicant. Dr. Manautou will detail the components that are critical and inspire the study panel reviewers to give high scores. Problems and unexpected pitfalls will also be discussed. All speakers will address questions and comments from the webinar participants.
