II. Activities
2008–2009 Meetings:
The Winter 2008-2009 Symposium/Annual Meeting was held on January 29, 2009, at Lister Hill Auditorium in Bethesda, Maryland. The title of the symposium was “Civilian and Military Vaccine and Drug Safety Assessment: Perspectives on the Animal Rule.” Approximately 60 people from Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. were in attendance. A short business meeting took place at Noon during the lunch break. No minutes were taken.
The NCAC sponsored the Second Annual Girl Scout Nation’s Capitol Science Day on January 24, 2009. The event organized and ran two days of hands-on science explorations and demonstrations for girls in grades 1–12.
Travel Awards to the National SOT meeting in Baltimore, Maryland.
NCAC had a competition for travel awards for graduate and postdoctoral students to attend the SOT National Meeting.
The following awards were given:
Bern Schwetz Travel Award:
- 1st Place : Chengya Liang, VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA.
- 2nd Place: Pergentino Balbuena, VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA.
K–12 Activities
1) SOT RC Long Tern Initiative Planning Funding ($2,000) Received and Used to Support the 3rd Annual Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital Science Day (January 2009) in Frederick,MD.
2) NCAC-SOT Board and members participated in many roles during the Paracelsus Outside of the Classroom Science Activities Day, held the first day of the SOT National Meeting ( March 15, 2009) at the Port Discovery Museum, Baltimore, MD
3) NCAC-SOT Board members judged posters and presented cash awards for excellence in environmental/toxicological sciences at two local public school county science fairs (February 2009). Prince Georges County, Maryland
