NCAC-SOT MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION


Purpose
The National Capital Area Chapter of the Society of Toxicology (NCAC-SOT) was established to provide a regional focus for scientists of all disciplines interested in toxicology. The Chapter acts to:

  • Sponsor and co-sponsor symposia on current issues in toxicology.
  • Provide an annual award to an outstanding student in toxicology to assist in attending the annual meeting of the SOT.
  • Maintain communication with the National SOT regarding current toxicology and regulatory concerns.
  • Sponsor regional Chapter events at the annual meeting of the SOT.


Background
The NCAC-SOT was established in 1982 and its by-laws were approved by the Council of the SOT at the 21st annual meeting. The NCAC-SOT is governed by an elected group of four officers and four councilors together with several standing committees. Member of the NCAC-SOT are encouraged to participate actively in organizing symposia and as members of the standing committees. Members represent a broad group of scientists from academia, industry, government, consulting firms, industry trade associations, and a broad range of other organizations in the Baltimore, Virginia, and Washington region.

Membership Policy
NCAC-SOT membership is available to individuals on the following bases:

  • Membership is available to all individuals that have a professional interest in toxicology.
  • Membership in the National SOT is not required.
  • Students in toxicology, health, and environmental sciences are encouraged to become members at a reduced rate.
  • Individuals must be members of the National SOT to serve as an officer of the NCAC-SOT.


Membership Benefits/Activities

  • The Chapter sponsors/co-sponsors two or more symposia per year. Symposia cover topics of current scientific and regulatory interest.
  • Members pay reduced registration fees for attending symposia.
  • NCAC-SOT sponsors an annual Student Award to assist in defraying the cost of attendance at the national SOT meetings. The student award is based on the student’s proposed presentation and honors the immediate Past President of the NCAC-SOT.
  • The Chapter publishes and distributes a membership directory with updated telephone, fax and e-mail addresses.
  • The Chapter sponsors a reception at the annual Society of Toxicology meeting.
  • NCAC-SOT members can participate and direct the Chapter activities as members of the standing committees.
  • The Chapter interacts closely with the Association of Government Toxicologists and the National Capital Area Society of Risk Analysis. The Chapter often holds joint symposia and other activities with these and other related organizations.

All members receive the Chapter newsletter that contains information about Chapter activities, a schedule of upcoming events and symposia, and news items submitted by members concerning government workshops, university news and other information of toxicological interest.
