AESOT 2004 Spring Meeting

The 2004 Spring meeting was held at the Wyndham Pittsburgh Airport on May 14, 2004.  The topic of the meeting was “Toxicogenomics - Principals and Applications.”  Dr. Alexandra Heinloth, of the National Center for Toxicogenomics, discussed “Toxicogenomics - A Novel Tool in Predictive and Mechanistic Toxicology”Dr. Timothy Zacharewski, from Michgan State University, presented “Comparitive Toxicogenomic Examination of the In Vivo Effects of Ethylnyl Estradiol in Estrogen Responsive Tissues".  The meeting was attended by over 40 people from three states and was very well received.

Undergraduate Toxicology Teaching Forum 2004

The SOT and A-E SOT Education Committees sponsored their 4th Undergraduate Toxicology Teaching Forum which was held at the SOT Annual Meeting in Baltimore.  The goals of the Baltimore Forum were to complete a mission statement for an undergraduate toxicology teaching group, finalize a proposal for an SOT 2005 workshop on undergraduate education, and develop a formal structure for continuing the group.  For additional information please contact Dr. Tom Simmons at <tsimmons@iup.edu>.

2004 Winter Workshop: Tox in a Box

The A-E SOT hosted a winter workshop on the Tox in a Box™ Education Tool Kit. The workshop was held February 27, 2004 at Bayer Corporation. The meeting was attended by 19 people and was very well received. 

Tox in a Box™ is a K-12 Education Tool Kit (literally a suitcase of materials!) for Environmental Health Professionals, such as toxicologists, to use when visiting classrooms. Tox in a Box™ contains activities and demonstrations for all grades and was developed by the Community Outreach and Education Program at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA.

AESOT 2003 Fall Meeting

 The 2003 Fall meeting was held at the Stone Mansion restaurant in Franklin Park, PA on October 10, 2003.  The topic of the meeting was “Chemical Weapons: Overview and New Methods of Detection and Protection.”  Dr. Michael Allswede, a medical toxicologist from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School and a member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, discussed “Strategic Medical Intelligence.”  He described how this system can be used to prevent and handle terrorist-related events associated with chemical or biological agents by creating a supportive network of physicians, law enforcement, emergency management and communications specialists trained to deal with such events.  Dr. Keith LeJeune, CEO of Agentase, LLC presented “Applying Protein-Plastics in Chemical Defense.”  He discussed developments in the utilization of enzyme impregnated systems for chemical weapons detection and personal protective equipment.  The meeting was attended by 24 people from three states and was very well received.
