Northeast Chapter of the Society of Toxicology

Welcome Letter from the President

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the NESOT website, and introduce myself as the new President of the chapter for 2011–2012. I’d like to thank our out-going President, Laura Andrews, for leading the Executive Committee over the past year and advancing the goals of the chapter; Laura will continue on the Executive Committee for another year as the Past President.

The most important message I would like to deliver is that NESOT is YOUR local chapter of SOT. I encourage you to become more involved by attending the annual Fall meeting (this year (2011) planned for the Biogen Idec facility in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Friday October 14). But even before then, you can help NESOT by responding to a survey on the topic for this year’s Fall meeting (which you should already have received directly from SOT Headquarters). I am aware that it can be difficult to satisfy all expectations regarding the primary focus of our annual Fall meeting, given that our membership crosses many disciplines of toxicology, so I urge you to complete the survey and in this way contribute your voice to NESOT.

There are other ways in which you can influence NESOT’s activities and contribute to its success: by presenting a poster at the Fall meeting (for which there are 3 monetary awards for the best student posters), by putting your poster forward for the Fall Meeting Student Speaker Award, by submitting an application for a Student Travel Award to attend the SOT Annual Meeting (in San Francisco in 2012, so the monetary awards will be very helpful in defraying the costs of air travel), and by submitting your name as a candidate for a position on the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee is composed of 8 officers (President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, Past President, two Councilors, a Postdoctoral representative and a Student representative—view our current membership), providing plenty of opportunity to become involved at your comfort level. The Committee should reflect the general membership, but can do so only if you join us. It is also a great opportunity to network with toxicologists in the northeast, and a potential stepping stone to influencing SOT!

Finally, feel free at any time to send me a direct e-mail if you have any suggestions on how NESOT—YOUR local chapter of SOT—might better meet your needs. A newsletter with details of the Fall meeting and other chapter business will be forthcoming soon.

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I thank you for your support of NESOT, and look forward to hearing from you and seeing you in October.

Sincerely,

Paul Nugent, Ph.D., DABT
President, Northeast Chapter of SOT
