Association of Scientists of Indian Origin
SOT Special Interest Group

Message from the President

Although Society of Toxicology officially initiated Special Interest Group program during the year 2005, Association of Scientists of Indian Origin is the only group at SOT that is in existence since 1981. Initiated by few members, each year our group met at the SOT annual meeting and grew in size. Since beginning the important goal of our group is to provide a networking venue for toxicologists of Indian origin working in the USA and also for toxicologists from India. It appears that because of our existence, SOT Council recognized the importance of groups such as ours and the potential contribution in achieving some of the goals and objectives of SOT.

Since SOT recognition, we immediately met SOT's goal for a self-sustaining group. Currently, our group has over 70 members and raised funds. Last year, during fund raising we collected significant amount of funds. One of our senior members, Dr. Dharma Singh generously donated $5000 to support and enhance our activities and focus on student participation. For the year 2007-2008, we plan to focus on increased student involvement. We now have a postdoctoral representative in addition to student representative. With help from these representatives we plan to explore the ways to increase student participation in our award program. We are also exploring to have a representative from India and an association with Society of Toxicology India (STOX).

I thank you all for this opportunity to serve as your president and I am excited about the prospects for the coming years.
