Educational Resources

Animals in Research Working Group

The Animals in Research (AIR) Working Group is charged with providing the public and policymakers with educational materials about the humane use of laboratory animals in research. The group provides advice to the membership, identifies resources for use in public outreach, staffs an exhibit at the SOT Annual Meeting, and organizes the Colgate-Palmolive In Vitro Lecture for Students.

Education and Public Outreach

SOT is committed to providing information, tools, and resources to a wide variety of audiences. SOT members have devoted a good deal of effort to finding the most suitable and up-to-date information to educate members and the general public about the science of toxicology and the scientists who conduct the research.

Continuing Education Courses

SOT provides opportunities for toxicologists to increase their knowledge in the discipline by providing a wide variety of CE courses every year at the start of the Annual Meeting. SOT and the CE Committee are also proud to present the release of two on-line courses as part of a new and exciting pilot program to expand educational opportunities beyond the Annual Meeting.

Resources for Undergraduate Students

Toxicology provides many career opportunities for those seeking a profession that is innovative, science-based, and helps protect the health of humans, animals, and the environment.

Resources for Graduate Students

Graduate students are involved in the leadership of SOT through three committees. The two Graduate Committees consist of the Regional Chapter/Special Interest Group Graduate Committee and the Specialty Section Graduate Committee. These two committees are composed of one student representative from each of the Regional Chapters and Special Interest Groups and from the Specialty Sections. The Student Advisory Council is formed by the elected officers of the two Graduate Committees. The SAC oversees and coordinates the activities of the two committees.

Resources for Postdoctoral Fellows

The Postdoctoral Assembly (PDA) is a great resource for SOT postdoctoral scholars for scientific growth, networking, and career advancement. All members of SOT who self-identify as a postdoc are included in the Postdoctoral Assembly, which is governed by the PDA Board. These leaders are elected by SOT postdoctoral members, and provide leadership for communications and events of special interest to postdocs.

ToxLearn Module I: “Introduction to Toxicology and Dose Response” is a new National Library of Medicine resource developed in conjunction with the SOT Education Committee. ToxLearn is a multi-module online learning tool that provides an introduction to toxicology for users who have some familiarity with biology and chemistry. It can be used as an ancillary curriculum to a first-level undergraduate toxicology course, and can provide users of NLM toxicology databases with a working knowledge of basic toxicology principles. Additional units will be made available as they are completed.

ToxLearn is an update of NLM ToxTutor, which was designed to provide a basic understanding of toxicology as an aide for users of toxicology literature contained in the National Library of Medicine toxicological and chemical databases
