SOT and COPUS Welcomes Teachers and Schools to the Year of Science Celebration
2009 is officially designated as the Year of Science, according to the American Institute of Biological Sciences, Inc., a nonprofit 501©(3) scientific association founded in 1947 as a part of the National Academy of Sciences.
The themes of the Year of Science are:
January—Process and Nature of Science; Communicating Science
February—Evolution
March—Physics and Technology
April—Energy Resources
May—Sustainability and the Environment
June—Oceans and Water
July—Astronomy
August—Weather and Climate
September —biodiversity and Conservation
October—Geosciences and Planet Earth
November—Chemistry
December—Science and Health
Teachers might try taking one of the themes of this year and asking their students to create a project around that theme. Plan a celebration around that theme or ask students to research a scientist or type of science—like toxicology—then post what they have learned outside the classroom. You can set up a “What is Science” display in the school library or display case or host a science party in your classroom. Other activities could include, having students design a “What is Science” survey that they use to educate their parents or host a Bio-blitz that involves parents and the community.
Check out the COPUS Web site for more ideas or to join other groups that are hosting activities around the country.
