Dr. Teresa Palacios is a Biocompatibility Lead Reviewer (Senior Staff Fellow Biologist) in the Division of Joint Arthroplasty Devices, Office of Product Evaluation and Quality, Center for Devices and Radiological Health, US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), where she participates in the biocompatibility and sterility evaluation of new orthopedic implants and surgical instruments.
Her scientific expertise includes the in vitro toxicological evaluation metal oxide nanoparticles and polymeric nanomaterials employed as part of medical devices, as well as their synthesis and physicochemical characterization. Dr. Teresa Palacios performed three postdoctoral appointments as ORISE Fellow in the Division of Biology, Chemistry and Materials Science at CDRH (2016–2019), in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University (JHU, 2014–2016), and in the Department of Food and Chemical Engineering at Universidad de las Americas Puebla (UDLAP, 2014), Mexico, as nanotoxicology specialist. She also was Assistant Professor at Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla (UPAEP, 2010–2014), where she coordinated different research projects in nanomedicine and mentored undergraduate and master students.
Dr. Palacios obtained her Bachelor degree in Agricultural and Livestock Biology from Universidad Autónomaa de Tlaxcala in 2005, a Master’s degree in Biotechnology from UDLAP in 2007 and a Doctoral Degree in Chemical Sciences (Major in Inorganic Chemistry) from the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP), Mexico, in 2012. She is also member of the National System of Researchers in Mexico (SNI 1). She has been HOT member since 2010, where has served as Postdoctoral Representative (2014–2016), Secretary (2016–2018) and Councilor (2018–2020). Dr. Palacios has been actively involved in different initiatives inside HOT, such as the creation of the Trainee Section, the establishment of the webinar series “Updates in Toxicology”, her active participation writing scientific and career development contributions for Toxenlaces supplement, her support to the coordination of mentoring activities for HOT in SOT annual meetings since 2016, and the coordination of Social Media inside the organization.
