THE MSBSS STUDENT AWARDS ENDOWMENT FUND

A major initiative for MSBSS over the next few years is to develop an endowment fund to support MSBSS initiatives. Over the past several years, the student awards presented by MSBSS have been sponsored by Novartis and It would be great to develop an MSBSS endowment fund to support such initiatives in the future and make MSBSS as strong financially as possible. To review information about the SOT endowment funds, you can check the link on the SOT Endowment Fund website.

This will also give you a form that can be used to specify the MSBSS Student Awards. We will be considering naming the endowment should we receive a sustaining contribution. Please take the time to consider this opportunity, especially if you have been an MSBSS officer. The goal is to raise $30,000 by the Annual Meeting in 2010.

PRODUCE CUTTING-EDGE SESSIONS FOR THE ANNUAL MEETING

As evidenced by the 12 sessions sponsored by MSBSS in 2007 and 2008, a point of emphasis in MSBSS has been to provide top quality sessions that bridge multiple areas of interest. MSBSS will continue to improve on the quality and number of sessions submitted.

INCREASE MSBSS MEMBERSHIP AND INVOLVE MORE STUDENTS AND POSTDOCS

MSBSS membership has increased steadily over the past several years due to improved communication by MSBSS members. A major goal for the 2007–2008 year is to increase the number of student members. One aspect that will help this initiative is the election of the MSBSS student rep through the annual ballot. The executive board has also made a big push to inform laboratory PIs to talk with their students about membership. Members have also been asked to consider postdocs as session co-chairs when developing proposals.
