The Big Data Work Group was initiated during a break-out session at the Spring 2019 SLC face-to-face meeting. In Summer 2022, the Work Group was merged with the Science and Risk Communication Work Group and renamed Data Analysis, Visualization, and Risk Communication (DAVRC), with a new focus on promoting the synthesis of data science, toxicology, risk assessment, and scientific communication. Useful data visualizations are key to making big data understandable to a human audience. The DAVRC Work Group is considering data visualizations and balancing human perception and machine learning/artificial intelligence needs as a new tool for toxicologists and the general public to assess, communicate, and manage risk.
Recent Accomplishments and Goals:
- FutureTox V Breakout Session: What “Big Data” streams are being used in Toxicology and Risk Assessment Wednesday, May 11, 2022
- 12th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences.WC12 | August 27-31, 2023 | Niagara Falls, Canada
Proposed Session: “Implementation and Regulatory Acceptance of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) in Human Health Risk Assessment” - Future seminars on big data applications in toxicology, risk communication, law enforcement, and legal litigation
In addition, member societies of the SLC have individual efforts focused on big data (e.g., the EMGS Bioinformatics Challenge) which have found a wider audience via sharing through the SLC. Work Group participation is open to all SLC representatives. All SLC webinars are available as live events to SLC member societies. All recorded webinars are available to the public.
