South Central Chapter—SOT

Testing samples

Welcome to the South Central Chapter-SOT website. The South Central Chapter (SCC) of SOT serves academic, government, and industrial toxicologists throughout the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and western Tennessee. Established in 1982, the SCC’s mission is to foster scientific exchange among those in the region involved in toxicological research and teaching plus its application to human and environmental risk assessment. To meet this goal, the SCC-SOT sponsors

  1. An annual fall meeting at alternating locations throughout the 5-state area
  2. An annual reception at the national SOT meeting
  3. Predoctoral student awards to foster research training

Details on our meetings are provided on the Events page. Chapter officers with their contact information are listed on the Officers page.

Further communication among SCC membership is achieved through publication of a biannual SCC Newsletter, which includes notices of regional seminars, position announcements, and news of professional accomplishments of SCC members plus opted pieces on contemporary toxicological issues and communications from the national SOT.

President’s Message

Welcome to the South Central Chapter (SCC) of the Society of Toxicology (SOT)! Our regional chapter serves those interested in toxicology in the region of Oklahoma, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. This truly offers a platform for interactions among toxicologists from government, industry, and academia by sponsoring and organizing scientific and educational programs in toxicology in the region.

It is a great honor to serve as the President of the SCC of the SOT. I extend my warm welcome to new members and newly elected board members for 2019-2020. I would like to personally welcome our new board members Dr. Russell Carr (VP), Dr. Alexandra Noel (VP-elect), Dr. Annie Lumen (Secretary), Dr. Mitchell McGill (Treasurer), Dr. George Howell (Councilor), Dr. Zhen Ren (Councilor), Laura Ewing (Graduate Student Representative).

I would like to sincerely thank the leadership of our SCC-SOT including Past President’s Dr. Nan Mei (Past President 2017-18) and Dr. Igor Koturbash (2018-19). It has already been a fast-paced and exciting year! The South Central Chapter held a mixer event with the Lone Star Chapter during the 2019 SOT Annual Meeting in Baltimore. This reception was held on March 11, 2019 from 5 to 6:30 PM at the James Joyce Irish Pub and Restaurant (616 S. President St, Baltimore, MD, 21202). Dr. Igor Koturbash (President of the SCC) and Dr. Somshuvra Mukhopadhyay (President of LSC) called the meeting to order at 5:45 PM on March 11, 2019. This event was very-well attended with equal participation from both chapters, which resulted in the participation of over 100 members. All attendees from both chapters enjoyed this relaxing event and maximized networking opportunities and discussed about the future meeting in Shreveport, LA.

We plan to have our Annual Meeting in Shreveport and will be held on October 17-18, 2019 at the LSU Health Science Center, Shreveport, Louisiana. The focus of this year’s meeting is “Toxicology for the 21st Century” with key note speakers dealing with immune-oncology and pharmacogenomics approaches. Please save this date on your calendar! More information will be available at the website in the near future.

I hope to meet all of you at SCC-SOT meeting! Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any question or suggestion: psgill@uams.edu
