South Central Chapter—SOT

Testing samples

Welcome to the South Central Chapter-SOT website. The South Central Chapter (SCC) of SOT serves academic, government, and industrial toxicologists throughout the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and western Tennessee. Established in 1982, the SCC’s mission is to foster scientific exchange among those in the region involved in toxicological research and teaching plus its application to human and environmental risk assessment. To meet this goal, the SCC-SOT sponsors

  1. An annual fall meeting at alternating locations throughout the 5-state area
  2. An annual reception at the national SOT meeting
  3. Predoctoral student awards to foster research training

Details on our meetings are provided on the Events page. Chapter officers with their contact information are listed on the Officers page.

Further communication among SCC membership is achieved through publication of a biannual SCC Newsletter, which includes notices of regional seminars, position announcements, and news of professional accomplishments of SCC members plus opted pieces on contemporary toxicological issues and communications from the national SOT.

President’s Message

Welcome to the South Central Chapter of the Society of Toxicology (SCCSOT)! Our regional chapter serves those interested in toxicology in the region of Oklahoma, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. This truly offers a platform for interactions among toxicologists from government, industry, and academia by sponsoring and organizing scientific and educational programs in toxicology in the region.

As the newly elected President, I would like to say thank you to the SCCSOT members for entrusting me with the responsibility of leading the chapter. I am truly honored. As we in academia start a new academic year and those members in government and industry transition from summer to fall, I wanted to reach out and personally thank all the SCCSOT members for your involvement in our chapter. Although there was an introductory email, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the 2025—2026 SCCSOT leadership team. The officers are: Past President—MD Hossain, President—George (Trey) Howell III, Vice President (VP)—Gunnar Boysen, VP-Elect—James Wise, Secretary—Courtney Roper, Treasurer—Barbara Kaplan, Councilor—Eddie Meek, Councilor—Suresh Nagumalli, Postdoctoral Representative—Sandeep Kondakala, Graduate Student Representative—Melanie Wilson.

The leadership team is in active conversations regarding the planning of our regional meeting which will be held on November 14, 2025, at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. You each should have received a “Save The Date” announcement from the SCC Leadership email. We wanted to get the date and location out so that members could go ahead and make travel arrangements. For those that could not attend, we had a very productive and engaging regional SCCSOT meeting at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences on December 7, 2024, which was focused on graduate and postdoctoral fellow/technician-based podium and poster presentations. Dr. Boysen deserves kudos for arranging the planning of the meeting and has an excellent recap of the meeting that will be in the Fall newsletter coming out soon!

Again, thank you all for your membership in our chapter. Please watch out for emails from the leadership team. We want and value your feedback! I hope you all have an extremely productive and successful year.

Sincerely,

George Howell III, PhD
SCCSOT President
