Lake Ontario Regional Chapter of the Society of Toxicology Welcome to the Lake Ontario Regional Chapter of the Society of Toxicology! President’s Message Dear Lake Ontario Regional Chapter Members,
Sola dosis facit venenum (Only the dosage makes the poison)
The Lake Ontario Regional Chapter (LORC) is one of the geographically largest and the only international regional chapter in the Society of Toxicology. Our borders span Ontario and Upstate New York with a membership as diverse as its geography, including graduate students and academics from over fourteen toxicology-related institutions and programs. Our vast geography presents both opportunities and challenges in recruiting and communication. It is not often that members can interact in-person except during the SOT Annual Meeting or at the joint Allegheny-Erie/Michigan/Lake Ontario Regional Chapters reception. One of the rare outcomes in a post-pandemic world was the opening of the virtual world for meeting space and online interactions. While this webpage and ToXchange will remain the first points of contact and a repository for bylaws, event notices, and other information, the Executive Committee plans to engage more virtually with members and improve our social media presence. You may be aware that SOT is proposing a change to the membership structure to make Associate member the entry point for all new members to our Society. If this change is approved, one of the considerations for transitioning someone to Full membership after three years as an Associate member is membership in an SOT Component Group, such as a Regional Chapter. Many people are not aware that they can join a Regional Chapter without being a SOT member. To encourage new and continuing membership, the Executive Committee has decided to maintain our dues at a very reasonable $15 per year (and only $5 for graduate students and postdocs). Please help us spread the word. We also plan to update our 2016 list of universities and colleges in our region that have toxicology-related programs. We hope to build relationships with these programs. Once the list is updated, it will be made available on our website. Cheers, Mark Korchinski, MSc, DABT, ERT
