Dear Biological Model Specialty Section (BMSS) members,
It is my great honor to lead our Biological Modeling Specialty Section (BMSS) for the 2023–2024 term. Our Specialty Section has approximately 150 members across many disciplines from different sectors, including academia, industry, and regulatory agencies. We are a strong, diverse, and vital specialty section at the Society of Toxicology (SOT).
The mission of BMSS is to serve as a focal point for interactions of SOT members who are interested in all types of biological modeling in toxicology, including but not limited to in vitro kinetic modeling, in vivo whole-body physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling, quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) modeling, dose-response modeling, organ growth modeling, disease-progression modeling, molecular docking simulation, and other aspects of quantitative systems toxicology modeling. We are also interested in integrating machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) approaches into our biologically-based computational models to build more robust models.
To support the mission of BMSS, the BMSS Executive Committee provides our BMSS members with several opportunities yearly on a set of activities. Our BMSS officers develop, propose, support and conduct programs and education activities to facilitate interactions among BMSS members and between BMSS members and other SOT members, help professional development of BMSS members, and share the latest development in biological modeling of toxicology with a broader community of toxicology. We have always been impressed with the quality and diversity of our efforts—especially now, with our increased focus on collaboration, empowerment, and diversity.
In everything we do, our goal is to better serve our BMSS members and provide opportunities for more BMSS members to engage with BMSS activities, whether during a networking event, mentoring luncheons, webinars, reception meetings, sharing ideas, and other events. Having a strong professional network that you can count on with a difficult question or help you improve your career journey is very important if a job/career/project change is on the horizon.
All the BMSS initiatives focus on enriching your experience as members, so we are always open to feedback on our current opportunities and how we can better serve you. If you have any suggestions or need some help, please feel free to contact us.
Thank you, members, for your continued support, participation, and enthusiasm in our professional community. Finally, I'd like to give a special shout-out of appreciation to our previous and current BMSS officers for their hard work and the support they provide. Our dedicated BMSS volunteer officers, a group of sponsors, and our volunteers make all our efforts possible. Wishing you a safe, healthy, and successful year and looking forward to seeing you soon in Salt Lake City.
On behalf of BMSS Executive Committee,
2023–2024 BMSS President
