Yves Alarie Diversity Award for Trainees and Young Investigators

The Yves Alarie Endowment Fund of the Society of Toxicology (SOT) was established in July 2019 by his students, friends, colleagues, and family. Dr. Alarie, a longtime member of the SOT, has made significant contributions to the fields of inhalation toxicology and computational toxicology. During his career as a Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, he advised, trained, encouraged, and supported many students in the field of toxicology. A monetary award of at least $2,500 will be given to a motivated trainee or young investigator from an under-represented group that is working in the field of computational toxicology and shares Dr. Alarie’s passion for science. The award must be used for the professional development of the trainee/young investigator including research, travel and/or registration to a scientific meeting or training (e.g., leadership or science).

Applicants for the Award are not precluded from applying for travel support or other SOT Awards outside of the CTSS. Winners of the Yves Alarie Diversity Award are not eligible to apply for the award over consecutive calendar years.

Criteria for Award:

  1. Relevance of work to computational toxicology
  2. Enrollment in a doctoral or a postdoctoral program in the field of toxicology or a closely related discipline, with evidence of career advancement or an early investigator conducting research in the field of toxicology or a closely related discipline, that has been working in academia, industry, government, or other organizations for less than five years. Those working for a governmental agency should get approval from their agency to accept the award prior to applying.
  3. Current SOT member (any category of membership)
  4. Preference will be given to current CTSS members or those that have applied to be a CTSS member.
  5. Member of an under-represented group in the biomedical sciences, such as defined by the National Institutes of Health* (NIH) (e.g., African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Native Hawaiians, women, individuals with disabilities, economically disadvantaged individuals, etc.). Members of other under-represented groups not identified by NIH may also apply by providing a narrative describing the under-represented group(s) to which they belong and reason(s) for CTSS consideration of their application. The CTSS committee will review all applications.
  6. Originality and strength of scientific research
  7. Accepted abstract and planned attendance at the Annual SOT Meeting
  8. Familiarity with the work conducted by Yves Alarie as evidenced by a narrative (see below).

Submission Requirements:
  1. Copy of submitted abstract
  2. Short and concise narrative about the trainee/young investigator, applicability of work to computational toxicology, and a description as to how the funds will be used. the applicant should also indicate their membership in an under-represented group and how this has impacted their training. The narrative should be short and concise (one page or less, single-spaced, font size no less than 10, with at least one-inch margins).

  4. Letter of recommendation from a full SOT member

Elsevier Postdoctoral Award & CTSS Student Award

The Computational Toxicology Special Section (CTSS) is pleased to announce two awards available, one for a current graduate student sponsored by CTSS and one for a postdoctoral scholar sponsored by Elsevier, for attending the SOT Annual Meeting.

A graduate student and a postdoctoral scholar will be selected. Each awardee will be awarded a monetary prize of $1,000.

Submission requirements are:

  1. Applicants conducting research in computational toxicology as defined by the CTSS website are encouraged;
  2. The applicant is not required to be a CTSS member but is highly encouraged;
  3. An abstract must have been submitted and accepted for the upcoming SOT Annual Meeting with the graduate student or postdoctoral fellow as the presenting author; the late-breaking abstract is acceptable;
  4. A letter must be received from the mentor outlining the fellow's role in the research;
  5. The awardee will be required to provide a seminar on their latest work at the CTSS meeting at the upcoming SOT;
  6. A student/postdoctoral scholar is not eligible for the same award if they have won it previously, but a former student awardee can apply the postdoctoral award;
  7. Recipients of this award will not accept travel awards from any other Specialty Section for the upcoming SOT Annual Meeting.

A copy of the accepted abstract and a recommendation letter from the PhD student/postdoctoral fellow's mentor or a CTSS member must be sent as an electronic file attachment (Word or pdf) to sotctssawards@gmail.com no later than the deadline.

The awardee will be notified by February 1.




Paper of the Year Award

The Computational Toxicology Specialty Section is pleased to announce that this year we will be awarding a prize for the computational toxicology 'Paper of the Year'.

The award recipient will receive a monetary prize of $1,500.

Submission requirements are:

  1. The study should be original research which is scientifically relevant to advance the computational toxicology field and expand toxicology as well;
  2. The awardee must be first or corresponding author, and the paper must be accepted or published between January 1-December 31;
  3. The candidate can be self-nominated or nominated by either the CTSS Executive Committee or any CTSS member;
  4. The applicant is not required to be a CTSS member but is highly encouraged;
  5. The awardee will be required to provide a seminar on their latest work at the CTSS meeting at the upcoming SOT Annual Meeting;
  6. Recipients of this award should not receive the same award previously, and will not accept travel awards from any other Specialty Section for the upcoming SOT Annual Meeting.

Top 10 Best SOT-CTSS Abstract Award

Any abstract submitted to the Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting which indicates a Computational Toxicology focus or impact is eligible for this Best Abstract Award. For consideration, please include “computational toxicology” as a key word. After acceptance of the abstract by the SOT Program Committee, please send a copy of the accepted abstract to the contact below. The applicant is not required to be a CTSS member but is highly encouraged.

Top 3 Winners Receive: Achievement plaque to the lead author and a monetary prize of $250. The winners will be selected at the conference and awarded after the work has been presented

All Winners: Blue Ribbon presented at talk or poster and recognition at the CTSS Reception
