Filling the Gap in New Approach Methodologies (NAMs): From Scientific Innovation to Standardization Using Organoid Models

New approach methodologies (NAMs) provide alternative testing strategies to reduce or replace animals used for testing chemical safety, drug toxicity, and adverse health outcomes. In recent years, organoid models have emerged as a promising tool for NAMs. Organoids are three-dimensional cell cultures derived from human stem cells and primary tissue cells, and they provide an alternative model that reflects the original tissue's composition, architecture, and function. In many cases, they recapitulate specific tissue responses to a toxicant. Despite this promise, there are few examples of successful implementation of organoid models in the context of NAMs for the toxicological community. This session will bring together experts to discuss the potential of organoid-based NAMs for advancing toxicological testing. Dr. Srivatsan Kidambi will speak about standardization of organoid models for toxicity testing, regulatory science, and clinical translation. Dr. Julie G. In will discuss intestinal organoids as a model system to study host-toxicant interactions.
