Ms. Alma Avila Oropeza is a PhD Candidate in Toxicology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry. Born in Tijuana, Mexico, and a first-generation college student and immigrant, she investigates contaminated microplastics in allergic contact dermatitis, examining how microplastics carrying metals and environmental pollutants such as Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) affect skin toxicity and immune responses. Her research utilizes nanomembrane filtration technology alongside in vitro and in vivo skin models to evaluate pollutant adsorption, transport, and downstream biological effects.
Ms. Avila Oropeza earned her Masters in Toxicology (2025) from the University of Rochester and her Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry with a Minor in Spanish (2022) from California State University San Marcos. She is the author of multiple scientific presentations, with manuscripts in preparation on microplastics, metals, and environmental toxicology.
Ms. Avila Oropeza is a member of the Society of Toxicology since 2023 and is active within the Dermal Toxicology Specialty Section. She serves as President of Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) at the University of Rochester. She is dedicated to mentoring, outreach, and fostering diversity and inclusion in science.
