Carolina I. Ghanem, PhD

Dr. Carolina I. Ghanem is an Associate Professor of Pathophysiology in the Department of Medical Sciences at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and an Independent Researcher at National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET). She is a Biochemist (1996) and Pharmacist (2011) from UBA and earned her PhD in Biochemistry in 2007. Dr. Ghanem has completed research internships at prestigious international institutions, including the University of Connecticut (USA), supported by Fulbright and CONICET fellowships, and the University of Salamanca (Spain).

Dr. Ghanem is an active member of the international toxicology community, contributing through collaborations and ongoing research in pharmacology and toxicology. Her scientific work focuses on pathophysiology and toxicology, with particular emphasis on ABC drug transporters and their impact on the pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of medications, especially acetaminophen. Her research has significantly contributed to understanding drug–cell interactions, providing key insights for the development, safe use, and regulation of therapeutic compounds. She has authored or co-authored 28 peer-reviewed publications and presented her work more than 75 times at national and international conferences.

Dr. Ghanem has been a Full member of the Society of Toxicology (SOT) since 2017 and received the Global Senior Scholar Exchange Program award at the 2023 SOT Annual Meeting held in Nashville, Tennessee. Additionally, she was a Full member of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) from 2009 to 2021. She is currently a member of the Editorial Board of Current Opinion in Toxicology.
Iris A. Camacho-Ramos, PhD

Dr. Iris A. Camacho-Ramos is a toxicologist at Keller and Heckman LLP, specializing in human health risk assessment and regulatory toxicology. She advises clients on the safe use of chemicals in foods, food packaging, and related applications, ensuring compliance with U.S. and international regulations while safeguarding public health and supporting industry innovation.

A member of the Society of Toxicology for over 25 years, Dr. Camacho-Ramos spent two decades at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) working on scientific programs supporting the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). During her tenure, she led multidisciplinary teams conducting human health risk assessments and advanced systematic review and dose-response methods and approaches critical for evaluating chemicals. In her supervisory role, she launched efforts to attract exceptional talent to the agency and partnered with universities across the country to raise awareness of career paths in toxicology and risk assessment. Her dedication to mentorship, especially supporting early‑career scientists, including Latinos, reflects her commitment to building a strong, diverse workforce prepared to tackle complex environmental health challenges.

Dr. Camacho-Ramos, a native of Puerto Rico, began her academic journey at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez campus before moving to the mainland, where she earned her B.S. in Biological Sciences from Virginia Tech and a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. Her doctoral research focused on the immunotoxicity of TCDD (dioxin), and two of her publications received the Society of Toxicology’s Immunotoxicology Specialty Section as “Best Paper of the Year” in 2000 and 2007.
