Federico Sinche Chele

Dr. Sinche is a researcher at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and adjunct professor at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, where he researches on innovative technologies for the water sector, and methods to quantify and report GHG emissions from water facilities, and the role of green infrastructure to mitigate the impacts of climate changes on urbanized areas. His research interests also include aquatic ecotoxicology, risk assessment, bioavailability, nanotoxicity, and legacy and emergent pollutants. He is interested in using toxicity endpoints and allied bioavailability analytical tools to answer chemical and toxicology questions important to developing and implementing water and soil management as part of a One Health Framework. Dr. Sinche has been the PI of a participatory action reaction with underserved communities in the Ecuadorian Amazonia since 2018. He has played a key role in obtaining funds, developing partnerships among Indigenous communities, the Ministry of the Environment of Ecuador, and the local undergraduate colleges in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon region. The ultimate goal of this work is to empower citizens, Indigenous communities, and local authorities of this region to use rapid and reliable tools to assess the pollution status of their natural resources. Dr. Sinche received his doctorate in Zoology with emphasis on Aquatic Toxicology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2018 and started working in higher education in the same year in Ecuador. He has authored and co-authored 20 peer-reviewed articles in his areas of expertise. In 2022, Dr. Sinche was appointed as an Editorial Board member of the Journal of Integrated Environment Assessment and Management. He has also served as a journal peer reviewer of the Journals Environmental Toxicology & Chemistry, Environmental Pollution, Limnology and Oceanography, and Talanta. Dr. Sinche has been a member of the SOT since 2009 and has served on the Committee on Diversity Initiatives (2016–2017), Graduate Student Leadership Committee (2014–2015; 2015–2016), Volunteer Committee for continuing education courses (2012–2013; 2013–2014; 2014–2015; 2015–2016), Communication and Education Committees at the HOT (2013–2016), and as a Graduate Student Representative at the HOT (2014–2015; 2015–2016). In 2013, Dr. Sinche received the HOT Travel Award to attend the annual SOT meeting. More recently, he has been working as chair and co-chair of the Scientific Committee (2022–pres.) and Education Committee (2020–2021). Because of his dedication and active involvement with the HOT organization, Dr. Sinche received the “Outstanding Councilor of the Hispanic Organization of Toxicologists” award in 2022. He continues to work on the professional and scientific initiatives supported by the Hispanic Organization of Toxicologist to foster toxicological opportunities and awareness among students and professionals of Hispanic and Portuguese origin.
