Dr. José Arturo Jiménez–Chávez is a postdoctoral fellow in the Air Pollution and Health Effects Laboratory (APHEL) at the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, part of the Joe C. Wen School of Public Health at the University of California, Irvine. In APHEL, he investigates the toxicity mechanisms by which exposure to ultrafine particulate matter in murine models may activate fibrotic and neovascularization pathways in underexplored ocular tissues. This research aims to elucidate the contributions of environmental pollutants to the pathogenesis of ocular diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy and macular edema, thereby enhancing the understanding of the long-term health effects associated with environmental exposures.
He graduated from the PhD Toxicology program (2023) at the Center of Research and Advanced Studies in Mexico City, Mexico, where he focused his research on the pulmonary and cardiometabolic effects generated by exposure to air pollutants and nanomaterials using in vitro and in vivo models. He is a co-author of six publications, including five peer-reviewed articles and one book chapter. He has participated in Society of Toxicology (SOT) meetings since 2018, during which he presented part of his work in SOT poster sessions, and became a member of the SOT in 2022.
