Jorge G. Muñiz Ortiz

Jorge Muniz

Dr. Jorge G. Muñiz Ortiz is a Lieutenant Commander in the US Public Health Service. Jorge G. Muñiz Ortiz was born in Medellín, Colombia and grew up in San Juan, Puerto Rico. After graduating from Colegio San José in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico in 1998, he attended the University of Dayton, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 2002. He graduated with his PhD in Molecular Toxicogenetics from the University of Cincinnati in 2009. Jorge received further training in toxicology at the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) from 2009 to 2012 as a Postdoctoral Fellow and at the North Carolina State University from July 2012 to June 2013 as a Postdoctoral Scholar. In 2013 he was called to active duty with the Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service as a toxicologist. His first tour of duty was with the Science Staff of the Office of Public Health Science within the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the US Department of Agriculture. In December 2016, Jorge became a board-certified general toxicologist and joined the Risk Assessment Branch of the Antimicrobials Division (AD) of the Office of Pesticide Programs of the US EPA. In May 2022, Jorge joined the Bureau of the Primary Health Care at the Health Resources and Services Administration as an Investment Oversight Advisor overseeing grant expenditures of federally qualified community health centers. Dr. Muñiz Ortiz has contributed to the field of Toxicology and Public Health Sciences with several scientific products, such as manuscript publications, scientific proposals, talks in conferences, webinars and courses. Dr. Jorge Muñiz Ortiz has been an active member of SOT and HOT since 2008. He has served on our HOT Executive Committee as Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Representative (2009-2010) and as Councilor during period 2011-2013 and from 2022-to-date. In HOT, he has coordinated the Awards Committee in our organization, has contributed in our newsletter Toxenlaces, and he has advocated for the interests of Hispanic toxicology postdoctoral fellows and graduate students from Hispanic/Latino origin. Dr. Muñiz Ortiz was awarded with the HOT Outstanding Officer Award in 2022, for his dedication and efforts towards the success of our organization.
