Dr. Torres-Hernández, a native of Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, is very passionate about biology, environmental science, and toxicology. He started his academic journey by earning a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Biomedical Sciences with the distinction of magna cum laude from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico in 1999. During his undergraduate years, he received sponsorship from the prestigious NIH MARC program to conduct research.
In 2004, Dr. Torres-Hernández attained his Master's in Environmental Science and Management, with a minor in Environmental Analysis, from the Universidad Del Turabo, Gurabo, Puerto Rico. Following his passion for learning, he moved to Texas to pursue a PhD in Environmental Toxicology, which he completed in 2013. During his doctoral studies, he received notable fellowships, including the NASA JPFP predoctoral fellowship.
Dr. Torres-Hernández’s commitment to excellence in toxicology is evident through his completion of various industry-recognized training programs, including Mid-America Toxicology, ACT Advance Comprehensive Toxicology, Harvard Risk Assessment, TERA Dose Response Boot Camp, PBPK modeling for beginners, OSHA 40 hours Hazardous Waste Operation Training, and Comprehensive Industrial Hygiene. Further, he gained hands-on experience during a one-year internship in the mechanistic toxicology division at the renowned consulting firm Exponent in Houston, Texas.
Following the successful completion of his doctoral degree, Dr. Torres-Hernández authored a book, Toxicological Risk Assessment for Beginners. This book has garnered significant recognition and is listed as the third recommended reading in the DABT (Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology) handbook in preparation for the test. Dr. Torres-Hernández is Board Certified Toxicologist (DABT) since 2023.
Dr. Torres-Hernández’s career journey continued with a highly competitive industry postdoctoral role in regulatory toxicology at the chemical company Lubrizol. He later transitioned to the US EPA Office of Pesticides where he served as a toxicologist. Subsequently, he joined Procter and Gamble as a human safety toxicologist ensuring consumer product safety. Currently, he serves as a medical device toxicologist at NAMSA, a leading medical device contract research organization.
Dr. Torres-Hernández served in the past as a Graduate Student Representative for HOT and RASS. He is also a full member of SOT and HOT member.
