In addition to convention center personnel, SOT employs security staff to assist before and during the meeting. The personal safety tips outlined on this page are provided by these security experts.
The best way to stay safe is to be aware of your surroundings and to avoid situations in which you feel uncomfortable. Travel “smart” when you leave the San Diego Convention Center:

Safety Ambassadors are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round in Downtown San Diego. These individuals provide myriad services, including safe walks home, directional assistance, welfare checks, and more. Visit the Downtown San Diego Partnership website to learn more.
While SOT employs a security service that assesses potential threats in the form of protests or other activities before and during the meeting, there is always the possibility of demonstrators given the nature of toxicology research. Events of this nature range from verbal confrontations, protests, and strikes to riots.
Here are some safety tips in the event of demonstrations:
San Diego is a city that is recognized nationally for sustainability. In 2025, San Diego achieved LEED Gold Certificate for Cities and Communities from the US Green Building Council.
Fruits, vegetables, seafood, and other products are sourced within a 150-mile radius whenever possible.
San Diego Convention Center kitchens do not have any garbage disposals. All green waste is composted. Unused food is donated to local nonprofits, schools, and shelters.
Water bottle refill stations are located throughout the building to reduce plastic waste. Where individual containers are needed, water is served in cans instead of bottles to minimize single-use plastic consumption.
The Convention Center employs a four-stream waste receptacle system: paper, recyclables, trash, and compost.
Drought-tolerant plants, drip irrigation, and mulch are used in landscaping to reduce water waste.
By sourcing greener energy from San Diego Community Power, San Diego Convention Centers has increased their renewable percentage from 31% to 50%. Also, the entire facility uses LED light fixtures.
