SOT Guidance for Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technology
The Society of Toxicology (SOT) acknowledges that artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are powerful tools that provide various functions. With this guidance, SOT is expressly referencing generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, and will use the terms generative AI and AI interchangeably.
SOT is supportive of using generative AI for efficiency and effectiveness, but the Society does not support the presentation of content, data, or other media generated exclusively from AI without human oversight and review. AI can assist with functions, but it should not replace an individual’s creativity, sensibilities, or judgement and should be used in an ethical and responsible manner.
When AI is used to produce content (written, oral, and other formats) for sharing with SOT leadership, volunteers, meeting attendees, or other individuals within the SOT community, the use of AI must be documented for the audience, with statements such as:
- “I attest that this content used AI to revise content that I generated.”
- “I attest that AI was used to help ensure the accuracy of this content.”
- “I attest that AI was used in the creation of graphics and illustrations.”
This list is not meant to be exhaustive, and attestations should be used to disclose other uses of generative AI when applicable.
Acceptable uses of AI may differ within specific SOT programs and initiatives (e.g., award and abstract submissions, applications, nominations). AI is not recommended when creating content that is meant to be unique to an individual, such as a personal statement in an awards application.
For its part, SOT attests that generative AI is used by volunteers and staff to assist with content that includes, but is not limited to, written communications (e.g., blogs, website language, emails); graphics (e.g., artwork on the website, images used in ads and promotional materials); and administrative output (e.g., meeting minutes). When AI is used, it is offset by human review and refinement. In its use of AI, SOT does not share personal or confidential information.
